Lawrence Technological University recently introduced a new "fast track" graduate certificate, Manufacturing Systems for the Defense Industry, to help engineers who have been displaced in the auto industry make the transition to the growing defense industry in Southeast Michigan. In developing the certificate program, Lawrence Tech worked with defense suppliers such as Raytheon and General Dynamics, military planners at TARDEC and TACOM in Warren, economic development specialists at Automation Alley and employment specialists at the Oakland County office of Michigan Works!
Nearby Macomb County is also capitalizing on the defense industry with its strong and diverse business base focused on defense and homeland security. Several world-class facilities are located right in Macomb, including General Dynamics, BAE Systems, Burtek Incorporated, General Purpose Vehicles, Global Tooling Systems. Models & Tools, U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
The Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau encourages meeting planners in the defense industry to contact its sales team about planning future meetings and events in metro Detroit. Go to www.visitdetroit.com or call (888) CALL-DTW (225-5389) for more information.
